Unit 4  |  The Global Water Crisis 97 The MDGs succeeded in increasing the number of people with access to clean water, but more must be done. By developed-world standards, remarkably modest invest- ments in sanitation and water systems can alleviate many of the health-related problems in the developing world. Organizations such UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are spearheading efforts to provide the neces- sary resources to fulfill the promise of water and sanitation as human rights. While these efforts are extremely important, access to clean water and sanitation will require the long-term commitment of the global community.
