The global population is currently over 7 billion and is projected to top 9 billion by 2050. In addition, booming economic growth has led to increased con- sumption of water-intensive foods, clothing, and other products. Along with these trends, many argue that deep social and economic inequality leaves the most vulnerable citizens in the population unable to meet their basic water needs. Even in countries experiencing severe water scarcity, there is normally enough water available to meet essential human requirements.
