Unit 2 | Water Science and the Water Cycle 41 Water is so much a part of our lives that it is easy to take it for granted. We drink it, wash with it, use it to grow gardens and lawns, and depend on it for generating electricity and manu- facturing products. Water covers much of our planet and makes up a significant part of our bodies. But what is water really? Why is it so important for life and the functioning of the Earth? Water may seem to be a simple material, but a deeper look reveals that it has many fascinating properties which make life possible. In this unit we will explore the unique chemical and physical properties of water, water distribution, the water cycle, aquatic ecosystems, water pollution, and the watershed framework. THE BIG IDEA UNIT 2 SELF-ASSESSMENT Before beginning this unit, consider what you already know about water science and the water cycle by completing this self-assessment. For each statement below, rate your current level of confidence with understanding sustainable water concepts. NOT CONFIDENT SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT CONFIDENT I am able to explain basic concepts in water physics and chemistry. ❍ ❍ ❍ I can explain how water science is relevant to sustainability. ❍ ❍ ❍ I am able to describe the global water cycle. ❍ ❍ ❍ I am able to describe aquatic ecosystems and why they are important. ❍ ❍ ❍ I am able to describe different types of water pollution and how they can be addressed. ❍ ❍ ❍ I am able to explain the benefits of using a watershed framework approach to environmental management. ❍ ❍ ❍
