Unit 1 | Why Water Matters 36 GROWYOUR KNOWLEDGE Do you know where your water comes from? In this activity, you will research your own local water resources and develop an educational presentation about them. You may work alone, with a partner, or in small groups. Some online resources that might help you get started include the video “Where Does Your Water Come From?” produced by the Nature Conservancy, located at https://youtu.be/YtdCbHR1zoQ and the EPA’s partnership program “Water Sense” at http://www.epa.gov/watersense/. 1. Where does your water come from? Contact your local water utility, either online or by phone, to find out. It could be a specific lake, river, groundwater supply well, or combination of these resources. 2. Is water conservation important in your area? How does your town or municipality treat, distribute, and dispose of water? Use the Internet or conversations with local officials to learn the answers to these questions. 3. Research and list one or two organized initiatives near where you live that are addressing water use or treatment issues. What is their call to action? What incentives have they created? Have they been successful? What challenges do they face? 4. What can you do to help conserve local water resources? 5. When your research is complete, create a presentation using the information you have learned. The presentation should answer the questions above. Share the presentation with your class, or with others.
