12 Introduction Certification in Sustainability This course is part of the GEF Institute’s progressive certificate pathway. Certificates are awarded with successful comple- tion of key units to encourage and motivate you to take steps toward sustainability literacy. In this ever-growing field of study, GEF Institute credentials are acknowledged as an achieve- ment. Earning a certificate demonstrates your understanding and commitment to sustainability. GEF INSTITUTE CERTIFICATES: Sustainability Apprentice— This certificate demonstrates a well-rounded overview and introduction to sustainability con- cepts such as the environmental, economic, and social impacts of sustainable choices. Sustainability Professional — This certificate demonstrates a high-level understanding of today’s primary sustainability issues, such as sustainable agriculture, climate change science, the global water crisis, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, the global ecosystem, humanity’s ecological footprint, and the importance of biodiversity. Sustainable Water Specialist— This certificate is awarded for comprehensive study of the environmental, economic, and social concerns associated with the increasing global and national water availability crisis. Recipients must earn the Sustainability Apprentice and Sustainability Professional certi- fications as part of this award.
