While it is easy to find information concerning sustainability, the volume of available data can be overwhelming. In addition, different Web sites may offer conflicting information or points of view. How can you know which one is the most accurate? In this activity, you will explore a variety of online data resources to assess the validity of the information in learning about sustainability topics. 1. With your teacher’s permission, visit each Web site listed below and examine the information on the page. ■■ Data Finder (www.prb.org/DataFinder.aspx ) ■■ Gapminder World (www.prb.org/DataFinder.aspx ) ■■ The World Factbook (www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/ index.html) ■■ Worldmapper (www.worldmapper.org/ ) 2. Select one of the four data resources listed to examine in more detail. Assess the site for accuracy and validity. 3. What are the three most interesting indicators or statistics available on your selected Web site that would help you to better understand and learn about quality of life around the world? List them and briefly explain how this information is helpful. CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING 1. What is sustainable development? In sustainable development, what are the two primary threats to the sustainable world? 2. How much of the world’s population lives below the $1.90 poverty line? What are the trends in income inequity and why are they concerning? 3. What are the three causes of the obesity epidemic? 4. What are the diseases and illnesses driving childhood mortality in the developing world? What are some of the ways that we can prevent and treat these conditions? 5. What does the term “governance” mean? What are the traits of good governance that contribute to sustainability?
