Unit 6  |  Social Changes of Sustainable Development 136 Trends of Global Child Mortality Rate, 1900 and 2015. Source: U.N. Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation In general, people in industrial nations enjoy greater life expectancy and better overall health than people in develop- ing countries, but they still face a host of challenges. In the U.S., these include high costs of medicines and health care, with millions uninsured in a system that relies on for-profit insurance companies. Non-communicable diseases, such as heart diseases, diabetes, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases, impact both devel- oped and developing countries. The causes of such diseases are well known, including unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, tobacco use, and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
