Unit 6 | Social Changes of Sustainable Development 129 6.2 Poverty, Equality, Environment, and Justice The link between poverty and environmental destruction has been the subject of a great deal of research. This relationship is complicated and depends on factors of governance , corrup- tion, and community structure. Inequality is often a factor in unsustainable behavior. There are many cases where a lack of economic resources forces people to rely upon unsustainable practices, such as burning scarce firewood for heating or cook- ing. Power imbalances often give large corporations the ability to buy land and resources in poor countries, where people who are negatively affected have little voice or power.
