Unit 5  |  The Importance of Biodiversity 120 The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and other organizations work with governments and communities to prevent the trade in threatened wildlife by training local anti-poaching wardens, monitoring compliance to CITES and national wildlife laws, and by leading education and outreach campaigns. The IUCN maintains a “Red List” of global species, placing each on a scale ranging between “Least Concern,” “Threatened,” “Endangered,” to “Extinct.” The black rhinoceros is poached for its horns.
